The other day, it was announced on the news that a study done by the government showed that the main reason why so many people voted against the Lisbon Treaty, was because they didn't understand it.
What I think is shameful is that so many people seem to have been pushed in to making a decision on the treaty regardless of whether they understood a word of it or not.
I mean, around the time that I turned 18, and started to realise that I was in a position to decide how I thought the country should be run, there were so many ads the TV trying to get the next generation of people to register and vote. But for some reason, the option to intentionally spoil one's vote seems to have gone out the window.
If all the people who hadn't understood te treaty had spoiled their vote instead of just voting no, not only would it have been much clearer that there was something not quite right about the lucidity of the literature posted to every registered voter, but the government might actually been able to do something about it!
Instead now, we have some government representitives saying that they accept and respect the decision of the Irish people, and some saying that there is the possibility of re staging the whole referendum, both of these ideas, I find ridiculous.
I say, if you don't like or understand what you're being asked to vote for, either don't vote, or far better, spoil your vote.
If the people of Ireland have a problem with the system, f*cking say something!
